Making the Most of February: Life Inside MIFANT's Darwin Community

February 2026 was a full month at MIFANT. From origami and painting sessions at MiPlace Hub to op shopping adventures and a dip at Nightcliff Pool, our community showed up, connected, and made the most of every day together.
MiPlace Hub runs origami with Sachi Hirayama every Thursday as part of the regular program. It's one of those sessions that just keeps delivering.
There is something about folding paper that brings people together. Concentration, patience, a few laughs when the shape doesn't quite work out, and the quiet satisfaction of holding something you made with your own hands.
Participants sat around the table together in February, working through each fold, helping each other out, and holding up their finished creations with pride. No experience needed. No pressure. Just people making something beautiful together.
That's what mental health support in Darwin can look like. Not a waiting room. Not a checklist. A table, some colourful paper, and people who are glad you showed up.
Art and Craft with Kerry Sandhu
Tuesday mornings at MiPlace Hub have become something our participants look forward to. Kerry Sandhu's art and craft sessions give participants a space to slow down, be creative, and express themselves without any expectation of perfection.
In February, participants worked on their own canvases, with everything from vivid night sky paintings to delicate pencil sketches taking shape across the table. Some participants are there every week. Others dropped in for the first time.
Creativity is one of the quieter pathways to recovery. When you are focused on painting or drawing, the noise in your head settles a little. You are present. You are doing something that matters.

The Monthly Speaker: Healthy Living NT on Diabetes
Our February Monthly Speaker session featured Healthy Living NT, who spoke with participants about diabetes, what to know, what to watch for, and how to look after yourself.
Understanding your physical health is part of looking after your whole self. These sessions are a small but meaningful part of what MiPlace Hub offers: a space where people can learn, ask questions, and leave a little better informed.

Cool Program: Getting Out and About Darwin
Op shopping might be the most underrated community activity going. You never quite know what you're going to find, and that is the whole point. The Cool Program's op shopping outing saw participants hunting through racks and shelves together, holding things up, swapping opinions, and making each other laugh. A few people found exactly what they were looking for. Others just enjoyed the browse. All of it was good.
February wrapped up with a Saturday at Rapid Creek Market followed by a movie at Casuarina. Vibrant markets, fresh produce, local stalls, then settling into a cinema seat together at Casuarina. Good company makes everything better, and this group has plenty of it.
What February Reminded Us
Mental health support in Darwin doesn't have to look like a clinical room and a formal appointment. It can look like two people laughing over a wonky origami shape. Or a group standing together at a war cemetery, quiet and reflective. Or someone finding a brilliant op shop bargain and grinning about it for the rest of the afternoon.
Recovery is built in moments like these. In showing up. In trying something new. In being part of a community that genuinely wants you there.
MIFANT has been walking beside Territorians for over 30 years. Every month at MiPlace Hub and the Cool Program is proof of why that matters.
