Mental Health Carers Australia (MHCA) has been the only national advocacy group solely concerned with the well-being and promotion of the needs of families and carers supporting someone with mental ill health. Their mission is to be the national voice for families and carers to enable the best possible life. From the mid 1980’s as the NT member of Mental Health Carers Australia, MIFANT has been instrumental in supporting this national alliance to influence systemic change in government policy and service provider practice to improve the family and carer experience of the mental health system.
We are therefore delighted to announce that after years of lobbying for an independent National Mental Health Carers peak body, Mental Health Carers Australia has been awarded funding to establish this much needed organisation. Once established, this peak body will work closely with the wider sector and government, to support better outcomes for all families and carers supporting someone with mental ill health.
Congratulations to Jeremy Coggin, President MHCA and Katrina Armstrong, CEO MHCA together with all those who have contributed to this effort over the years. A special mention goes to the family of Tony Fowke, the former MHCA President, who dedicated his life to advocating for mental health families and carers. Sadly, Tony passed away just weeks before this announcement.
