MIFANT supports the NDIS Review Panel’s vision for people with psychosocial disability and their families

Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT (MIFANT)expresses appreciation for the much-needed enhancements to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for individuals with psychosocial disabilities, as highlighted in the NDIS Review Report released this week. Since the inception of the NDIS, it has been evident that 154,000 Australians grappling with severe and complex mental health conditions were ineligible for NDIS support.

MIFANT welcomes the recent National Cabinet announcement, wherein the Commonwealth and Territory Governments will jointly contribute new funding to establish foundational supports, thereby addressing this eligibility gap.

While the detailed implementation of the recommendations outlined by the NDIS review panel is yet to be defined, MIFANT supports the panel's vision for individuals with psychosocial disabilities and their families, anticipating improved outcomes through:

• Early intervention measures related to foundational supports.

• Emphasis on recovery and capacity-building, empowering individuals to manage their lives, recognising the episodic nature of mental health challenges.

• Enhanced pathways connecting mental health clinical and non-clinical services, facilitated by specialist navigators.

MIFANT underscores its full support for these recommendations, emphasising the importance of proper regulation to ensure that support is effectively administered. The organisation supports tailored assistance for individuals living with mental health issues, regardless of their eligibility for an NDIS package, with the ultimate goal of enabling them to lead meaningful lives.
