Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT (MIFANT) Embraces Low-Cost Arts Engagement to Boost Mental Well-being

In response to the rising cost-of-living pressures affecting our community, MIFANT recognises the economic challenges faced by many individuals and families.

Budgets Are Stretched, But Mental Well-being Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

UWA researchers have recently highlighted the positive impact of engaging in arts activities on mental wellbeing. The Good Arts, Good Mental Health project emphasizes that even a 'dose' of just two hours per week in any arts activity can contribute significantly to improving mental health (GAGMH, UWA). Dr. Christina Davies, Director of the UWA Centre for Arts, Mental Health, and Wellbeing, emphasizes that "budgets are stretched at the moment, but arts engagement doesn’t have to be expensive. You don’t have to be good at art for the arts to be good for you.”

Social Media as a Health Promotion Tool for Mental Well-being

Another study from UWA researchers highlights the effectiveness of social media as a cost-effective health promotion tool for mental well-being. With 83% of Australians being active social media users, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, and LinkedIn offer an ideal space for targeted messaging and community education.

MIFANT’s Response: Community Art Programs and Social Media Challenges

MIFANT offers a community art program at its drop-in center in Coconut Grove. The art program runs every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm and is free of charge. This initiative is part of MIFANT's commitment to making mental health resources accessible to everyone in the community.

In addition to the in-person art programs, MIFANT will launch a series of social media art challenges inspired by the GAGMH project. These online challenges aim to get people's creativity flowing through activities such as listening to favorite music, colouring, origami, photography, and reading. The challenges will be freely accessible to the public and will serve as a cost-effective means of enhancing mental wellbeing.

Join the Movement – MIFANT’s Art Programs and Social Media Challenges

MIFANT invites the community to join the art movement by attending the drop-in center's art programs or participating in the social media art challenges. These initiatives aim to enhance mental wellbeing through creative expression, offering a positive and inclusive environment for all.
